Certification Watch (Vol. 20, No. 34)

In this week's roundup of the latest IT certification news, CompTIA cautions against the collateral complications of connectivity (it's the IoT, stupid), CertMag launches a new online survey, and more.

Man vs. Roomba: The IoT and Your Personal Data

CW 082317 RoombaWe may not yet live in the world of George Jetson, but the Internet of Things is looking more and more like a fast track to getting us there. On the other hand, new technology means new rules, as well as new (and often unforeseen) challenges. A forward-looking post to the IT Career News blog of IT industry association CompTIA sketches out one troubling scenario that's already here: In the beginning (about 20 years ago), a Roomba was just a vacuum on wheels that used sensor technology to move itself around obstacles and avoid things like falling down the stairs. Newer models, on the other hand, are IoT-enabled and can do things like map the floorplan of your home and transmit that information to Roomba maker iRobot. That probably sounds innocuous to some and sinister to others, but the fact that a simple vacuum can capture details about your home and send those details to a far-flung database certainly makes you wonder what more complex and sophisticated deviced might already be capable of.

The Price Is Right for New Cisco Training Webinars

Speaking of computers that are capable of independent action, the future is apparently colliding with the present all around us. As computer networking evolves, much of that change is moving networking professionals in the direction of automation, enabled by cloud computing and data center technology. For the benefit of those in the field who find themselves more and more frequently running to keep pace, Cisco Learning Network, the certificaiton and trainging arm of networking titan Cisco, has released a collection of free webinars. There are a number of webinars to choose from, many of them associated with various Cisco certifications, including CCIE Service Provider and CCNP Data Center. Among the topics covered are software-defined networking (SDN), the cloud computing tools CloudCenter and Nexus 9000 Series Switches, and carrier ethernet technologies. Also, don't forget the price, as in there's not one. Free IT training is good.

ISACA Expands Online Certification Training Offerings

Not all online training is free, of course, but one of life's little rules tends to frequently be that you have to make an investment to get a return. Some investments don't pay off as well as others, of course, but it seems likely that you couldn't go wrong by giving the benefit of the doubt to security and governance association ISACA. Especially when it comes to new online training for ISACA's own certifications. The widely respected Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) and Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC) credentials are among the best-compensated credentials in IT. The most recent Certification Magazine Salary Survey pegged the average annual salary for CISM holders at $135,350, while the number for CRISC is $131,310. Now ISACA Education is offering new online training to guide learners through exam prep for both CISM and CRISC. The new training is not cheap ($895 for anyone who is not a member of ISACA), but seems highly likely to get the job done.
