Oracle Global Team Leader for Certification Test Development Walks the Walk

Can certification really boost your career? DBA Trainer and Oracle expert Joel Goodman says yes and shares how certification has helped him achieve career success.

If there's anything you want to know about Oracle DBA certification, Joel Goodman is your man. Not only does he hold more Oracle certifications than can be reasonably crammed onto a resume, he also managed to snag a spot as the global team leader for Oracle DBA certification test development. Joel's first certification was as a DBA on Oracle 7.3 back in 1997; now he's credentialed all the way up to 11g and has no plans to stop passing exams. GoCertify recently caught up with Joel and asked him what all these certifications have and haven't done for him.

First, to fully understand the level of skill you're dealing with, here's the full list of his certifications:

  • Oracle Certified Professional Database Administrator - 7.3, 8.0, 8i, 9i, 10g, 11g
  • Oracle Certified Master Database Administrator - 9i, 10g
  • Oracle Certified Expert RAC Administrator - 10g
  • Oracle Certified Expert SQL Developer - Oracle 10g
  • Oracle Certified Expert Oracle on Linux Administrator - 10g

Here's what he had to say about what all of these have done for him:

GoCertify: Have you achieved your certification goals?

Joel Goodman: Yes. It adds credibility in the classroom and helps me advise delegates and colleagues on various aspects of the certification program.

GoCertify: How has certification helped advance your career?

Joel Goodman: By allowing me to become known in the Oracle industry as an expert on DBA certification. In 1997 when I got my first certification, it also helped me assess myself against a known standard but in my capacity as the Global team leader for Oracle DBA certification test development this is not really the case.

GoCertify: Which certification do you feel has benefited you the most and why?

Joel Goodman: Oracle Database Certified Master, as this is a very difficult certification and gives one a very good reputation in the industry.

GoCertify: Which certification has proved least useful?

Joel Goodman: The SQL certification as I am not a developer, but even that has been useful at times in the classroom or at conferences where I speak.

GoCertify: What do you enjoy most about being certified?

Joel Goodman: The credibility it provides in the classroom.

GoCertify: Have you found a downside to being certified?

Joel Goodman: No.

GoCertify: How long did it take you to become an Oracle Certified Master?

Joel Goodman: Measured by the time from when the first exam was available in 2002, only a few months as I had the skills already. Measured by the years of experience I had before sitting the exam, seven years. Measured by the years required to attain the skills it was probably three to five years.

GoCertify: How did you become the global technical team leader for the Oracle Database Certification exam development team?

Joel Goodman: I was Invited to do this by the Global Certification Exam development project manager based on many years of being a leading exam review volunteer for DBA OCA and OCP exams. When the OCM team leader moved on to other work in Oracle, I was invited to do the work for OCM. As I was already heavily involved with OCP, the virtual role was formalized.

GoCertify: What advice do you have for anyone who wants to become certified?

Joel Goodman: Perform a gap analysis based on the skill areas on the Oracle Certification website for the specific exam of interest. Then spend time practicing those skills that are weakest based on the analysis. For OCM exams hands-on is essential as it is a performance based exam.
